NEW YORK -- The price of oil jumped 1.7 percent Friday after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke made clear in a speech that the central bank will do more to revive the U.S. economy.
U.S benchmark crude rose $1.59 to $96.21 per barrel in morning trading Friday. Brent Crude, which is used to price oil used by many U.S. refiners, rose $1.49 to $114.14.
In a speech at an annual Fed conference in Jackson Hole, Wyo., Bernanke said the economic recovery is "far from satisfactory" but he did not give any timetable for action that might reduce borrowing costs and help stimulate growth.
If the Fed reduces the cost of borrowing, it could boost demand for the energy needed to fuel growth and make oil and other commodities more attractive investments.
"With interest rates near zero, people look for somewhere to put their money. One of those places is the oil market," said energy analyst and consultant Jim Ritterbusch.
Oil prices have wavered between $94 and $97 per barrel over the past two weeks, and Ritterbusch expects them to stay roughly within that range well into September. World oil demand is rising only slightly, and supplies are adequate. But continued worries over tensions between Iran and the West will keep prices from dropping. Expectations of financial stimulus programs from U.S. and European central banks will also keep the market propped up.
Hurricane Isaac did not have a major effect on crude prices this week, even though almost all of the oil production in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico was halted ahead of the storm. Production is expected to return to normal over the next several days.
U.S. retail gasoline prices surged over the past week after the storm forced several Gulf Coast refineries to shut down or operate at lower rates. But the dramatic price spike appears to be over and pump prices are expected to start falling after Labor Day, the last big driving weekend of the summer.
The average retail gasoline price rose less than a penny to $3.83 per gallon Friday according to the Oil Price Information Service, AAA, and Wright Express.
Tom Kloza said he expects average retail prices to creep slightly higher by Saturday. "But we're in the ninth inning of this," he said.
In other Nymex energy futures trading, heating oil advanced 2 cents to $3.16 a gallon, while wholesale gasoline added 4 cents to $2.94 a gallon. Natural gas rose 3 cents $2.78 per 1,000 cubic feet.

The condition is treated with a variety of antibiotics, even though there has never been a well-established bacterial cause.

The mite species Demodex folliculorum is worm-like in shape and usually lives harmlessly inside the pilosebaceous unit which surrounds hair follicles of the face. They are normal inhabitants of the face and increase in number with age and skin damage -- for example, following exposure to sunlight. The numbers of Demodex mites living in the skin of rosacea patients is higher than in normal individuals, which has previously suggested a possible role for the mites in initiating the condition.
More recently, the bacterium Bacillus oleronius was isolated from inside a Demodex mite and was found to produce molecules provoking an immune reaction in rosacea patients. Other studies have shown patients with varying types of rosacea react to the molecules produced by this bacterium -- exposing it as a likely trigger for the condition. What's more, this bacterium is sensitive to the antibiotics used to treat rosacea.
Dr Kevin Kavanagh who conducted the review explained, "The bacteria live in the digestive tracts of Demodex mites found on the face, in a mutually beneficial relationship. When the mites die, the bacteria are released and leak into surrounding skin tissues -- triggering tissue degradation and inflammation."
"Once the numbers of mites increase, so does the number of bacteria, making rosacea more likely to occur. Targeting these bacteria may be a useful way of treating and preventing this condition," said Dr Kavanagh. "Alternatively we could look at controlling the population of Demodex mites in the face.. Some pharmaceutical companies are already developing therapies to do this, which represents a novel way of preventing and reversing rosacea, which can be painful and embarrassing for many people."

NEW YORK (AP) ? Shares of Geron Corp. climbed Thursday after a Stifel Nicolaus analyst said the company should report a series of positive results from clinical trials of two cancer drugs over the coming months.
THE SPARK: Analyst Brian Klein started covering Geron shares with a "Buy" rating, saying the company should report data from six studies of its drug candidates imetelstat and GERN1005 over the next six to nine months. Klein said that data should pave the way for late-stage studies and a collaboration with a larger drug company.
"We expect compelling evidence in one of these two indications will lead to a registrational program and could generate a lucrative partnership," he wrote.
Klein set a price target of $4 per share.
THE BIG PICTURE: The Menlo Park, Calif., company is running four midstage studies of imetelstat as a treatment for lung cancer and breast cancer, and two of GRN1005 as a treatment for lung and breast cancer that have spread to the brain. Imetelstat is designed to inhibit an enzyme called telomerase, which is found in high levels in cancer cells. Geron says the drug may be less toxic to normal cells than standard chemotherapy.
While most cancer drugs cannot enter the brain, the company says GRN1005 is designed to deliver the chemotherapy drug paclitaxel to the brain so it can work on brain tumors.
Geron pioneered the development of embryonic stem cell therapies and ran the first human trials of treatments based on embryonic stem cells. However in 2011 the company ended a trial of a stem cell therapy for spinal cord injuries and said it would focus on its cancer drugs.
SHARE ACTION: Shares of Geron picked up 25 cents, or 10.3 percent, to $2.66 in midday trading. The stock traded as low as $1.25 in June and reached its current 52-week high of $3.13 in September 2011. The shares last traded over $4 in July 2011.

About 16 months ago my husband was a casualty in the closure of our local office of the company we had both worked for since 2005. He books and shuttles them to doctors, dentists, birthday parties, the library, etc. He also takes care of everything house-related including paying the bills, keeping the kitchen tidy, and helps me take and pickup my drycleaning when?the pile?becomes so large I need to rent a U-haul.
It has actually worked out quite nicely to have this new division of responsibility. Instead of having two overworked, stressed out, forgetful parents, we now only have me. My husband really keeps our home life on track and I have really enjoyed it.
This summer, we again took the children out of daycare and the three of them?jetted all around for a summer of fun. They spent a week in Dallas with some family. My husband?and I knew we would be asking for punishment simply by not giving them much time to adjust to a rigorous schedule before going back to school but we decided to go with it. After all, you're only a kid once right?
So Sunday night, August 5th I decided perhaps it would be good if I at least check out some things about the new school that Hayley was going to attend for first grade. I looked up the school website to try and determine what school hours are. Low and behold, I discovered that school didn't start Monday the 13th. School started WEDNESDAY AUGUST 8th.
Holy crap. I instantly tried finding flights to get them home within 48 hours so I could get her to the first day of school but the cheapest flights were going to total $2100. And why on Earth would school start in the middle of the week I ask?
I decided I would take the hit for not being in tune with the right start date. Someday if she comes to me in tears because she learns that she missed the first day of public first grade I will have to apologize profusely and tell her I was doing her a favor by letting her hang out with her cousins in Canada. In the end I didn't book an emergency flight home, she came home with her dad and sister on the 9th as they planned, we kept her home on Friday and she started on the 13th as I originally thought she would.
But one thing is true, I really did feel pretty crappy about it, especially because I was so confident that I knew when the first day was and I was the one that gave my husband misinformation. I've decided that I really AM Mother of the Year. I guess I need to just butt out and let my husband keep track of the things he is awesome at.
On a side note, since I am traveling so much these days for work I have become the fun parent. I let my kids eat FunDip after their bowl of cereal yesterday at 8:15am. I really am going to be Mother of the Year.

(HRPC) and ?androgen-independent prostate cancer? (AIPC). Neither of these terms is going to be appropriate either.
The other set of patients who are going to need to be defined are those men who have progressive disease after all known forms of hormonal manipulation, including all those described above as well as men progressing after treatment with drugs like
It may be that we should resusciate the term ?hormone refractory? to imply this set of patients, but there may be better terms. As just one example, the hormonal axis on which all hormonal therapy for prostate cancer is based is the so-called ?hypothalamic?pituitary?adrenal? (HPA) axis. If a patient becomes refractory to all attempts to manipulate the functions of that axis, perhaps we should define their condition?as ?HPA axis therapy resistant? or ?HPA axis therapy refractory? prostate cancer (HTRPC?).

They?re knocking on the lender?s door. As mortgage rates have tumbled to all-time lows, demand for refinancing has fired up homeowners nationwide.
And it?s not just those drowning in underwater mortgages. With rates for 30-year mortgages hovering below 4 percent since last October, all kinds of homeowners are trying to get their monthly mortgages reduced, say lenders and mortgage experts.
?It?s huge. It?s buried our staff and every other lender in town,? said O.J. Vallejo, mortgage consultant with First Priority Financial in Sacramento, who said his three-person staff has been working six days a week the last four months.
Nationally, refinance volume ?has been running at a three-year high in recent weeks, as mortgage rates remained extremely low,? Mike Fratantoni, vice president of research for the Washington, D.C.-based National Mortgage Bankers Association, said in an email. ?With refinances, the No. 1 driver is interest rates.?
Along with months of record-breaking low interest rates, other factors are driving the refinancing boom: a competitive lending market and changes in some federal refinancing programs for struggling homeowners.
It?s prompted many established homeowners with old-school, high-interest mortgages to decide it?s time to refi.
Neil and Louise Mueller, longtime Land Park residents, were encouraged by their financial planner to look into refinancing their 26-year-old mortgage last spring.
?It was almost too easy,? said Louise, an American River College counselor, who said the process, including a home appraisal, took about three weeks.
The result: Their 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage dropped from 5.12 percent to 3.87 percent, which lowered their monthly payment by about $100. They also pulled out about $11,000 for savings and for a family cruise overseas with their two adult children.
Generally the primary reasons for refinancing a mortgage are to:
? Lower monthly mortgage payments.
? Eliminate the unpredictability of an adjustable-rate mortgage by switching to a fixed rate.
? Free up home equity cash for home improvements, college costs or other expenses.
? Shorten the loan term, say from a 30- to a 15-year mortgage, which can save thousands in interest payments.

For example, a couple with a $250,000, 30-year loan at 5.25 percent three years ago would have been paying about $1,380 a month. ?Their payment goes up $25, but they just took seven years off their mortgage,? said Vallejo. ?That?s almost $116,000 in interest. That?s huge.?

His ultimate goal, he says, is to have the robot pass an iconic test first?proposed?in 1970 involving an animal (or in this case, a robot) recognizing changes to its appearance in a mirror. FORTUNE -- Gawker today?published?what it's calling The Bain Files, hundreds of pages of audited financials and private placement memoranda for old Bain Capital funds. Let me save you some time: There is nothing in there that will inform your opinion of Mitt Romney.
How do I know? Because I saw many of the exact same documents months ago, after requesting them from a Bain Capital investor. What I quickly learned was that there was little of interest, except perhaps for private equity geeks who want to know exactly how much Bain paid for a particular company back in 2006. Sure I would have loved the pageviews, but not at the expense of tricking readers into clicking on something of so little value.
Let's go over what Gawker believes it found:
"Mitt Romney's $250 million fortune is largely a black hole: Aside from the meager and vague disclosures he has filed under federal and Massachusetts laws, and the two years of partial tax returns (one filed and another provisional) he has released, there is almost no data on precisely what his vast holdings consist of, or what vehicles he has used to escape taxes on his income."
There actually is plenty of data on Romney's Bain-related holdings. For example, Bain's?own website?lists most of its active private equity portfolio companies. Then there are third-party databases operated by such organizations as Dow Jones, Thomson Reuters and CapitalIQ -- each one of which includes searchable lists of past Bain Capital deals (often with detailed financial information). And, finally, Bain isn't really in the business of doing tiny purchases of unknown family businesses. When it buys something, there is almost always a press release and/or media coverage. Perhaps Gawker hasn't yet discovered the magic of Lexis-Nexis. Maybe it should sign up for the?daily Term Sheet email.
"Today, we are publishing more than 950 pages of internal audits, financial statements, and private investor letters for 21 cryptically named entities in which Romney had invested... Many of them are offshore funds based in the Cayman Islands."
I get it. "Cayman Islands" is supposed to be code for tax avoidance or shady dealings. But the reality is that most private equity firms form Cayman-domiciled funds to accommodate investors based outside of the United States (particularly when those funds also are making some non-U.S. investments). One private equity fund formation attorney I spoke with says that the Caymans structure usually doesn't have real tax benefit for the non-U.S. investors, but that they nonetheless feel more comfortable. He added that, for most U.S. private equity executives, the Cayman structure has little to zero impact in terms of personal taxes.

"They also show that some of the investments that Romney has always described as part of his retirement package at Bain weren't made until years after he left the company."
Yes, because his retirement package provided Romney with ownership positions in Bain funds raised for 10 years after he left the firm (plus the ability to co-invest his own money). This isn't breaking news (mentioned here, for example).
"Bain isn't a company so much as an intricate suite of steadily proliferating inter-related holding companies and limited partnerships."
Right, it's a private equity firm. No one ever said it was "a company."
"When it came to the Bain investments, he simply listed the value of his investments in odd-sounding entities like 'Sankaty High Yield Partners II LP' with no indication of what was inside."
Odd-sounding? Maybe for those outside of New England (Sankaty is a Nantucket lighthouse), but it's also no big secret. For example, here's?the Sankaty website?that describes itself as a Bain Capital affiliate that "invests in a wide variety of securities and investments, including leveraged loans, high-yield bonds, distressed/stressed debt, mezzanine debt, structured products and equities." From that, you might guess that Sankaty High Yield Partners III is the high-yield bond part of its business.
Finally, many of Gawker's documents are for year-end 2009 (most of mine were for year-end 2008). As such, we can't even compare them to Romney's tax returns, since the GOP nominee still stubbornly refuses to release them.

I totally understand why a stack of papers marked "confidential" seems exciting, particularly for those without a deep understanding of private equity. And I'm not taking any position on if Romney did or didn't duck taxes at some point, either related or unrelated to Bain holdings. All I'm saying is that Gawker has posted tons of smoke without any fire.

With help from local internet companies, New York City is launching free tech classes for small businesses interested in building their own websites or marketing themselves using social media.?
The city's chief digital officer, Rachel Haot, will teach the first class on September 20 at the Business Solutions Center in Queens. "Entrepreneurs will be able to walk out of courses....with a new website or facebook page," Haot said.
About 60 percent of small businesses have an online presence, according to Haot.
Companies such as Mashable, Tumblr and Weebly helped develop guides for building web sites and for marketing through social media.? Mashable Vice President Stacy Green said that small businesses will be introduced to services that are free and that have the potential to reach thousands and hopefully millions of people. "Whether it?s Tumblr...or Four Square...or Twitter," she said.?
The city's Small Business Services is sponsoring the classes. Commissioner Robert Walsh said small businesses want to get up to speed and use the internet to grow and reach more customers.
"I was out in Brighton Beach yesterday meeting with a number of small businesses from the Russian community," Walsh said. "They need help in terms of getting on the internet.? They need help in developing their websites."
The city expects to offer 20 to 25 free classes at its Business Solutions Centers citywide. Hundreds of business owners are expected to be served, and the city says it hopes to reach thousands more through how-to-guides that will be posted online.
