Nanoparticles Could Let You Wear a Computer Made Out of Cotton (Mashable)

Tablets and ereaders are so 2011 -- a global group of material scientists have found a way to turn cotton into transistors and electrical circuits. In the (not so distant) future, Apple's newest product might just be a t-shirt. That might be a bit of fantasy but the science is very real. The group of scientists -- from top universities in Italy, France and America -- created two kinds of transistors, an organic field-effect transistor (OFET) similar to those found in a computer's CPU and a lower-voltage organic electrochemical transistor (OCET), ExtremeTech reported.

[More from Mashable: Social Network for Robots Lets You Talk to Your Roomba]

To create the transistors, the group coated cotton threads with gold nanoparticles and a variety of conductors. The process creates cotton that is stiffer than that found in your standard shirt, but more elastic and with ability to carry a current. Best of all, according to the group's research paper, the coating process is not time-consuming and is much like dyeing standard fabrics.

Apparel companies have tried putting electronics into clothing for a long time, whether its light-up graphics or even a functional mini-amp. The paper takes those concepts light-years forward by turning the actual material into a computing matrix. As ExtremeTech points out, most cotton clothing is made of hundreds and hundreds of interconnected threads. The computing possibilities for these transistor threads is off the charts. The real trick will be making sure you keep your wardrobe charged.

Is computerized cotton the clothing of the future or just a fantasy? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Map shows when solar power is a bargain

California's investments in renewable energy help make San Diego one of the hottest markets for green jobs in the U.S.

By John Roach

In 2013, the cost of solar power in San Diego will be cheaper than electricity?from the local utility grid, according the predictions of an energy policy analyst who created a handy graphic to illustrate when so-called grid parity will be achieved.

Sam Mircovich / Reuters

A prototype sun tracking solar panel made by Concentrix Solar collects energy from its location at the University of California San Diego in this file photo.

The interactive graphic posted on the Energy Self Reliant States website shows when?this moment?will be reached in major U.S. cities between now and 2027.?

Parity is a "tipping point, when democratization of the electricity system not only makes political and economic sense, but becomes more competitive than using utility-delivered electricity," writes analyst John Farrell.

His calculations assume that the cost of solar will continue to fall by 7 percent a year and grid electricity will rise at 2 percent a year.?

If true, then San Diego will be the first to reach the parity?milestone, followed by New York in 2015. From there, parity is progressively reached across the southern tier of the U.S. with my cloudy, rainy, northern hometown of Seattle not reaching parity until 2027.

Germany, France call for new EU treaty over debts

By Associated Press

PARIS -- The leaders of Germany and France called Monday for a new European Union treaty to ensure that the region's debt crisis never happens again.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Monday after a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel that they would prefer a treaty agreed by all 27 members of the European Union, but would also accept a treaty among just the 17 countries that use the euro.

The new treaty should include automatic sanctions for countries that violate rules meant to keep government deficits in check.

The meeting comes at the start of a crucial week for the eurozone, as it struggles to convince markets that it is able to solve its debt crisis.

Police: 6 die when town attacked in north Nigeria

Gunmen from a radical Muslim sect raided a town in northern Nigeria early Sunday morning, bombing police stations and robbing banks in an attack that killed at least six people, authorities said.

The attack in Azare in Bauchi state mirrored other recent attacks by the sect known as Boko Haram, showing their ability to strike at will in Nigeria's Muslim north. The attack also shows the group remains focused on raising cash for future attacks in the oil-rich nation.

Sect members bombed two police stations in the city and robbed local branches for bank chains Guaranty Trust Bank PLC and Intercontinental Bank PLC, Bauchi police commissioner Ikechukwu Aduba said. One police officer, one soldier and four civilians were killed during the five-hour attack, he said.

"We did not make any arrest, as investigations are still being carried out," Aduba said.

Aduba blamed Boko Haram for the attack, saying the assault Sunday mirrored attacks its members have carried out in recent weeks. The group has launched a series of bombings against Nigeria's weak central government over the last year in its campaign to implement strict Shariah law across the nation of more than 160 million people home to both Christians and Muslims.

Boko Haram claimed responsibility for a Nov. 4 attack on Damaturu, Yobe state's capital, that killed more than 100 people. The group also claimed the Aug. 24 suicide car bombing of the U.N. headquarters in Nigeria's capital that killed 24 people and wounded 116 others.

Little is known about the sources of Boko Haram's support, though its members recently began carrying out a wave of bank robberies in the north. Police stations have also been bombed and officers killed.

Boko Haram has splintered into three factions, with one wing increasingly willing to kill as it maintains contact with terror groups in North Africa and Somalia, diplomats and security sources say.

The sect is responsible for at least 387 killings in Nigeria this year alone, according to an AP count.

84-year-old woman: I was strip searched at JFK

By msnbc.com staff and news service reports

An 84-year-old New York grandmother said Saturday she was injured and humiliated when she was strip searched at an airport after she asked to be patted down instead of going through a body scanner.

Lenore Zimmerman said she was whisked away to a private room and made to take off her pants and other clothes after she asked to forgo the screening because she worried it would interfere with her defibrillator. She missed her flight and had to take one two-and-a-half hours later, she said.

?I walk with a walker ? I really look like a terrorist,? she told The New York Daily News. ?I?m tiny. I weigh 110 pounds, 107 without clothes, and I was strip-searched.?

?I was outraged,? said Zimmerman, a retired receptionist.

As she tried to lift a lightweight walker off her lap, she said the metal bars hit her leg, causing blood to flow from her?a gash, the newspaper reported.

?My sock was soaked with blood,? she said. ?I was bleeding like a pig."

But the Transportation Security Administration said in a statement Saturday no strip search was conducted.

"While we regret that the passenger feels she had an unpleasant screening experience, TSA does not include strip searches as part of our security protocols and one was not conducted in this case," the statement read.

Zimmerman was dropped off by her son at Kennedy Airport for a 1 p.m. flight Tuesday to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on JetBlue, she said. She arrived to the ticket counter around 12:20 p.m. and headed for security in a wheelchair, her small, metal walker in her lap.

She's been traveling to Florida for at least a decade and has never had a problem being patted down until now, she said. "I worry about my heart, so I don't want to go through those things," she said referring to the advanced image technology screening machines now in place at the airport.

Private screening
As a result, she said she was taken into the private screening room by one agent and made to strip.

A review of closed-circuit television at the airport showed proper procedures were followed, Jonathan Allen, a TSA spokesman, said in a statement.

"Private screening was requested by the passenger, it was granted and lasted approximately 11 minutes," the statement read. "TSA screening procedures are conducted in a manner designed to treat all passengers with dignity, respect and courtesy and that occurred in this instance."

The private screening was not recorded.

Zimmerman, who spends half the year in Long Beach, N.Y., said she banged her shin during the process and it bled "like a pig," partly because she is on blood-thinning medication. She said an emergency medical technician patched her up, but she was told to see a doctor when she arrived in Florida to make sure the wound didn't get infected. There are no records indicating medical attention was called on her behalf.

"I don't know what triggered this. I don't know why they singled me out," she said.

Her son Bruce Zimmerman said he'd like to see someone fired, and screeners re-trained after his mother's ordeal.

"My mother is a little old woman. She's not disruptive or uncooperative," he said Saturday. "I don't understand how this happened."

He said she's had an increasingly difficult time traveling, especially since her husband died a few years ago. She has two grandchildren, and her older son, a doctor, died in 2007.

Meanwhile, Lenore Zimmerman said she was healing, planned to go to the grocery store on Saturday and take it easy. Weather was about 76 and sunny, and she's not headed back to an airport until April when she returns to New York.

"Thank goodness," she said. "It will give me some time to brace myself for the return flight."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Republican Presidential Candidates Are Turning God into a ???Flip-Flopper??? (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Republican presidential nominee Newt Gingrich responded Thursday to attacks on him by his GOP rivals by essentially following Jesus Christ's words in Matthew's Gospel about "turning the other cheek." He emphatically told ABC News not only that "I'm going to be the nominee," but also, "I don't object if people want to attack me, that's their right. All I'm suggesting that it's not going to be very effective and that people are going to get sick of it very fast."

The Republican presidential hopefuls are turning God into a "flip-flopper." It's one thing to have former top-tier candidates claiming that the Almighty told them to run, but it's quite another to witness Gingrich's persona during interviews and debates, which emanate the vibes of an omniscient Messianic complex. Gingrich was recently chided by pundit Joe Scarborough for purportedly claiming that "Western civilization rests on my shoulders," according to Business Insider.

Whether one believes in the Christian god or not, it's interesting to note that the GOP continues to evoke religion into the 2012 presidential race. Earlier this year, Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., was quoted on CBS News' "Face the Nation" program as saying, "If I pray, a calling means that I feel like I have a sense from God."

Herman Cain, mired in numerous alleged sex scandals, had gone as far as comparing himself to Moses, according to National Journal. He quipped about his decision to run, "And when I finally realized that it was God saying that this is what I needed to do, I was like Moses. 'You've got the wrong man, Lord. Are you sure?' "

The Good Book clearly states in 1 Corinthians that "God is not the author of confusion." Does God want someone in the Oval Office like basic American history-challenged Bachmann; or Cain, who didn't even know that China has nuclear weapons per a "PBS Newshour" appearance? What kind of Christian testimony is it for Gingrich to openly brag before struggling Americans about his celebrity status which helped him make $60,000 per speech, as seen at Real Clear Politics? Why then, does God keeping changing his mind about front-runners?

Republican candidates need to take responsibility for their own egos when it comes to deciding on a run for the White House and how they come across to voters. Leave God out of it.
