A winning ticket also was purchased in northeast Kansas, according to the Kansas Lottery website. A spokeswoman didn't immediately return a message Saturday morning.

Each winning ticket was expected to be worth more than $213 million before taxes, Lang said. The winning numbers in Friday night's drawing were 02-04-23-38-46, and the Mega Ball 23.

Maryland Lottery spokeswoman Carole Everett said the last time a ticket from the state won a major national jackpot was in 2008, when a ticket sold for $24 million.

"We're thrilled," she said. "We're due and excited."

The estimated jackpot dwarfs the previous $390 million record, which was split in 2007 by two winners who bought tickets in Georgia and New Jersey.

Americans spent nearly $1.5 billion for a chance to hit the jackpot, which amounts to a $462 million lump sum and around $347 million after federal tax withholding. With the jackpot odds at 1 in 176 million, it would cost $176 million to buy up every combination. Under that scenario, the strategy would win $171 million less if your state also withholds taxes.

BOSTONA report from the nation's leading cancer organizations shows rates of death in the United States from all cancers for men and women continued to decline between 2004 and 2008. The findings come from the latest Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer.

The report also finds that the overall rate of new cancer diagnoses for men and women combined decreased an average of less than one percent per year from 1998 through 2006, with rates leveling off from 2006 through 2008. Edward J. Benz, Jr., MD, president of Dana-Farber Cancer in Institute in Boston, called the news encouraging, but is disappointed that the overall rate of cancer deaths is not falling nearly enough.

"The rate of cancer diagnoses and deaths across all racial and minority groups are slowly decreasing," said Benz. "But there are still gaps that must be addressed."

The report is co-authored by researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries, the National Cancer Institute, and the American Cancer Society. It will be posted on the web site of the journal Cancer on March 28, 2012.

Among children ages 19 years or younger, the report shows cancer incidence rates increased 0.6 percent per year from 2004 through 2008, while death rates decreased 1.3 percent per year during the same period.

The authors also highlighted cancers associated with excess weight and lack of sufficient physical activity.

"This report emphasizes that the growing obesity problem and decreased overall physical activity in our society compared to decades ago have a real impact on multiple diseases, including cancer," said Jeffrey A. Meyerhardt, MD, MPH, a colorectal cancer expert at Dana-Farber and author of several studies investigating the impact of exercise on survival rates for colorectal cancer patients. "While we currently see declines in incidence of many cancers, if obesity continues at the current rates, I believe these improvements in incidences will reverse and increase over time." Benz added that the good news is that some of the cancer risks the report highlighted can be reduced by changes in lifestyle.

Wall Street star Jon Corzine resigned in 2011 as chief executive of bankrupt futures broker MF Global, the first major U.S. casualty of the European debt crisis.

As MF Global was in the final throes of a fatal cash crisis, CEO Jon Corzine gave "direct instructions" to transfer $200 million of customer funds to cover an overdraft, according to a congressional memo released Friday.

The memo cited an October 2011 memo from assistant treasurer Edith O'Brien, who is scheduled to testify next week at the latest in a series of congressional hearings into the collapse of the firm.

The bankruptcy trustee overseeing the liquidation of the company?s brokerage subsidiary has estimated at $1.6 billion in customer funds is?missing.

Corzine, a former senator and governor of New Jersey, has testified before Congress that he had no specific knowledge of how customer funds may have been misused.

Steven Goldberg, a spokesman for Corzine, said Corzine did ask for the overdrafts to be corrected but "never gave any instruction to misuse customer funds."

"He never directed Ms. O'Brien or anyone else regarding which account should be used to cure the overdrafts, and he never directed that customer funds should be used for that purpose," Goldberg said in a statement.

Corzine has not been formally accused of any wrongdoing. Days after the request to transfer customer funds to cover the overdraft in a JPMorgan account in London, MF Global collapsed and was forced to file for bankruptcy.

According to a footnote in the congressional memo, broker-dealers like MF Global sometimes do deposit excess brokerage funds in segregated customer accounts, but there were clearly questions about the appropriateness of the requested $200 million transfer, which was reviewed by the firm's top lawyer.

The memo says JPMorgan chief risk officer Barry Zubrow called Corzine directly to seek assurances that the funds being transferred belonged to MF Global and did not include customer funds.

The bank followed up with a letter requesting written assurances that all MF Global transfers -- "past, present and future" -- complied with Commodity Futures Trading Commission rules about keeping customer money separate from the broker's own, according to the memo.

Laurie Ferber, MF Global Holding's general counsel, balked at the request as being too broad and instead wanted to narrow the written assurance to only the Oct. 28 transfer, the memo said.

When MF Global collapsed, the firm said it could not account for $600 million in customer funds. The figure has ballooned to $1.6 billion.

KOUROU, French Guiana (Reuters) - A European Ariane rocket blasted off from French Guiana on Friday carrying supplies to the International Space Station (ISS), space officials said.

Built by an industrial consortium led by EADS ASTRIUM, a division of European industrial giant EADS, the unmanned vessel is designed to deliver fuel, food, clothing and oxygen to the ISS crew as well as spare parts.

The cargo vessel is scheduled to dock with the ISS on March 28 and remain attached until August.

London, March 9: Greece said today that it had clinched a landmark debt restructuring deal with its private sector lenders. The deal clears the way for the release of bailout funds from Europe and the IMF that will save the country from imminent default.

The Greek finance ministry said that 85.8 per cent of private creditors holding 177 billion euros in Greek bonds participated in the bond swap. After invoking collective action clauses, provisions that will force the holdouts to accept the offer, the participation rate would rise to 95 per cent and meet the target set by Europe and the IMF for the release of crucial rescue funds.

The ministry also said that 69 per cent of investors holding a category of Greek bonds issued under laws other than Greek law had agreed to the exchange ? or about 20 billion euros worth. This figure is much higher than anticipated because many of these investors were expected to either challenge Greece in court or hold out for better terms.

Greece said it would extend the invitation period for these foreign law bond holders to March 23. ScienceDaily (Mar. 7, 2012) ? Researchers have just completed the genome sequence for the gorilla -- the last genus of the living great apes to have its genome decoded. While confirming that our closest relative is the chimpanzee, the team show that much of the human genome more closely resembles the gorilla than it does the chimpanzee genome.

This is the first time scientists have been able to compare the genomes of all four living great apes: humans, chimpanzees, gorillas and orang-utans. This study provides a unique perspective on our own origins and is an important resource for research into human evolution and biology, as well as for gorilla biology and conservation.

"The gorilla genome is important because it sheds light on the time when our ancestors diverged from our closest evolutionary cousins. It also lets us explore the similarities and differences between our genes and those of gorilla, the largest living primate," says Aylwyn Scally, first author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. "Using DNA from Kamilah, a female western lowland gorilla, we assembled a gorilla genome sequence and compared it with the genomes of the other great apes. We also sampled DNA sequences from other gorillas in order to explore genetic differences between gorilla species."

The team searched more than 11,000 genes in human, chimpanzee and gorilla for genetic changes important in evolution. Humans and chimpanzees are genetically closest to each other over most of the genome, but the team found many places where this is not the case. 15% of the human genome is closer to the gorilla genome than it is to chimpanzee, and 15% of the chimpanzee genome is closer to the gorilla than human.

"Our most significant findings reveal not only differences between the species reflecting millions of years of evolutionary divergence, but also similarities in parallel changes over time since their common ancestor," says Dr Chris Tyler-Smith, senior author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. "We found that gorillas share many parallel genetic changes with humans including the evolution of our hearing. Scientists had suggested that the rapid evolution of human hearing genes was linked to the evolution of language. Our results cast doubt on this, as hearing genes have evolved in gorillas at a similar rate to those in humans."

This research also illuminates the timing of splits between species. Although we commonly think of species diverging at a single point in time, this does not always reflect reality: species can separate over an extended period of time.

The team found that divergence of gorillas from humans and chimpanzees occurred around ten million years ago. The split between eastern and western gorillas was much more recent, in the last million years or so, and was gradual, although they are now genetically distinct. This split is comparable in some ways to the split between chimpanzees and bonobos, or modern humans and Neanderthals.

"Our research completes the genetic picture for overall comparisons of the great apes," says Dr Richard Durbin, senior author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, "After decades of debate, our genetic interpretations are now consistent with the fossil record and provide a way for palaeontologists and geneticists to work within the same framework.

"Our data are the last genetic piece we can gather for this puzzle: there are no other living great ape genera to study."

Gorillas survive today in just a few isolated and endangered populations in the equatorial forests of central Africa. They are severely threatened and their numbers are diminishing.
