(AP) ? Egypt's Islamist president has been significantly weakened by a week of violent protests across much of the country, with his popularity eroding, the powerful military implicitly criticizing him and some of his ultraconservative Islamist backers distancing themselves from him.

In his seven months since becoming Egypt's first freely elected president, Mohammed Morsi has weathered a series of crises. But the liberal opposition is now betting the backlash against him is so severe that he and his Muslim Brotherhood will be forced to change their ways, breaking what critics say is their monopolizing of power.

Critics claim that Morsi's woes are mostly self-inflicted, calling him overconfident and out of sync with the public. Now the relatively high death toll ? around 60 ? the spread of protests and the use of excessive force by the police are feeding a wave of anger at the Egyptian leader and the Brotherhood, the Islamist group from which he hails and which is the foundation of his administration.

Morsi did not help matters when he addressed the nation Sunday night in a brief but angry address in which he at times screamed and wagged his finger. In that speech, he slapped a 30-day state of emergency and curfew on three Suez Canal provinces hit the hardest by the violence and vowed to take even harsher measures if peace is not restored.

In response, the three cities defied the president in a rare open rebellion that handed him an embarrassing loss of face.

Thousands in the cities of Port Said, Ismailiya and Suez took to the streets on Monday and Tuesday just as the 9 p.m. curfew went into force. Underlining their contempt for him, they played soccer games, stores stayed open and there were even firework displays ? all while troops deployed in Port Said and Suez stood by and watched.

Morsi was forced to back down somewhat and authorized the local governors to ease the measures. All three quickly did on Wednesday, reducing the hours of curfew from nine hours to as short as three.

The main opposition coalition, the National Salvation Front, demands Morsi create a national unity government and rewrite controversial parts of the constitution that the Brotherhood and other Islamists rammed through to approval last month. A broader government, they insist, is the only way to ease the violence and start dealing with Egypt's mounting woes ? particularly, an economy many fear is collapsing.

The liberals gained an unusual ally on Wednesday: one of the main political parties of the ultraconservative Islamist movement known as Salafis, the al-Nour Party, which has usually supported Morsi.

Morsi appears to see no need for concessions. On a quick visit to Germany on Wednesday, he downplayed the significance of the week's violence.

"What is happening now in Egypt is natural in nations experiencing a shift to democracy," Morsi told reporters in Berlin.

There is no need to form a unity government, he added, because a new government will be formed after parliament elections ? expected in April at the earliest.

Morsi's reply to critics who demand he widen the circle of decision-making has been to invite opponents to a national dialogue conference to discuss key issues. Almost all opposition parties have refused, calling the conference window-dressing for Brotherhood domination. The conference has held multiple sessions, mainly attended by Morsi's Islamist allies.

Morsi's supporters ? and some of his aides ? accuse the opposition of condoning violence and trying to overturn the democratic results of elections that brought Morsi and the Brotherhood to power.

Meanwhile, anger on the streets is mounting. Politicians may call for a unity government, but a growing bloc of the protesters say Morsi must go outright.

The wave of resentment has engulfed the three Canal cities along with Cairo, Alexandria on the Mediterranean and a string of cities to the north and south of the capital. Protesters have clashed with police, cut off roads and railway lines, and besieged government offices and police stations.

The fury has been further fanned by reports that the police in Port Said at the northern tip of the Suez Canal randomly fired at protesters, killing innocent bystanders. In Cairo, protesters are seething over what they call the excessive use of tear gas and birdshot in clashes that have left three dead and hundreds injured.

Some protesters now demand Morsi be tried for killing protesters just as Mubarak before him was. Mubarak was convicted in June and sentenced to life in prison for failing to prevent the killing of some 900 protesters during the 2011 uprising against him. On appeal, a court has ordered his retrial.

"This man (Morsi) is responsible for the killings but no one is trying him. Is he above the law?" said Ashraf Helmi, a protester in Port Said.

In Cairo, protester Mabrouk Hassan Abu-Zeid, 26, said he expected things to get so much worse.

"A failed state? I see much more than that on the horizon. There could be a revolution by the hungry," he said near Tahrir Square as fellow protesters hurled stones at police firing tear gas.

In comments to cadets on Tuesday, the army chief and defense minister, Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, made what was seen by many as an implicit warning to Morsi that he must do something.

He said if political forces can't end their difference over how to run the country, it "could lead to the collapse of the state and threaten future generations."

There was no threat, implicit or otherwise, of a coup in the comments by el-Sissi, who many in Egypt suspected to have made a deal with Morsi when the president appointed him in August.

But military analyst and retired army general Hossam Sweilam said they conveyed the "gravity" of the situation and the possibility that it could a reach point where the armed forces could no longer stand by without intervening.

"Gen. el-Sissi understands the Brotherhood well and they will not be able to play him," he said. "Even if he was loyal to them at some point in the past, he is aware now that he is being closely watched by his own men."

Egypt's military saw its reputation tainted in the nearly 17 months it spent at the helm following Mubarak's ouster, with rights activists blaming the generals for mismanaging the transition to democratic rule and widespread human rights abuses. The top brass handed over power to Morsi following his June election, but tried to keep many of his powers.

Morsi struck back in August, forcing out the army chief and replacing him with el-Sissi.

The military remains widely popular and revered as the nation's protector. Some privately speak of their wish to see the military rid them of Morsi, his Brotherhood and other Islamists, provided the army's rule is short.

Now Salafis appear less willing to stand by Morsi, who has relied heavily on their support. Salafis won nearly 25 percent of parliament's seats in elections held in late 2011 and early 2012, in which the Brotherhood won around 50 percent.

After his talks with the Salvation Front on Wednesday, al-Nour Party leader Younis Makhyoun told reporters that Egypt must not be left in the hands of "a single faction," a thinly veiled reference to Morsi and his Brotherhood.

"There must be a real partnership," he added.

It is not clear at this stage how durable any cooperation would be between the Front and al-Nour, which are on the opposite ends of the political spectrum.

Al-Nour and other Salafis were key in ensuring passage of the constitution, which has a distinct Islamist slant and which liberals vehemently oppose. Salafis also push relentlessly for strict implementation of Shariah in Egypt, a mainly Muslim nation of 85 million people, and take a hardline stand on the rights of women and minority Christians.

But Salafis, too, worry about domination by the Brotherhood.

The Brotherhood is so confident in its own strength it thinks it doesn't need anyone's support, said Hamada Nassar, a spokesman for the political arm of the onetime jihadist Gamaa Islamiya group.

"The popularity of the Muslim Brotherhood in the street is eroding," he said, "but its leaders think that if they nominate a rock to run for parliament, it will win."

Heather Gould, Mathematics Education, Ph. D. - Teachers College

Heather Gould

Heather Gould is a fourth-year Ph. D. student in the Mathematics Education program. She grew up in Stone Ridge, a small town in Ulster County, New York. She attended the University at Albany ? SUNY and earned a bachelor?s degree with a double major in mathematics and anthropology. She also earned two master?s degrees from SUNY Albany, one in mathematics and the other in curriculum development and instructional technology.

Soon after, she started working on a research project entitled ?National Study of Writing Instruction? at SUNY Albany, where she was a research assistant and mathematics adviser.? She tutored at SUNY Ulster in their mathematics lab and taught college courses at SUNY Ulster, Dutchess Community College, and Hudson Valley Community College.

She then continued her academic career by attending TC. The faculty in the mathematics education program at TC have a range of expertise and Heather knew that, wherever her studies led her, she would have a faculty member to guide her. This and the location of TC in New York City, where she has always wanted to live, were the major contributing factors to Heather attending TC.

Heather has been offered various opportunities to work with faculty in the mathematics program at TC. Professor Vogeli emphasizes student publications, and Heather recalls, ?every time he offered me an opportunity to publish or gave me an idea to publish I tried to do so.? In addition to support with publication endeavors, she has been able to work with faculty to continue to do research in mathematics education.

Heather is beginning her fourth year of doctoral studies in mathematics education. She has written the first few chapters of her dissertation and has begun to collect data. She states, ?my first couple of chapters are decent works, the literature review is never done ? I am currently collecting data.?

Heather began with the intent of studying mathematics language acquisition but her knowledge of the current needs in mathematics education research has grown and with it, her interests have evolved. She is currently studying how teachers understand mathematical modeling, particularly with reference to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. ?With the introduction of Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, new emphasis has been placed on mathematical modeling. Unfortunately very few teachers seem to have a complete grasp of what mathematical modeling is?. That?s not a knock on teachers. That?s just the state of what has been taught before and what has not been taught,? she says.
Her academic interests outside of those she researches are mathematics manipulatives, mathematical language acquisition, and ethnomathematics (the study of how different cultures perceive mathematics).

Heather was the chair of the editorial board for the Teachers College Mathematical Modeling Handbook, which is a Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications (COMAP) publication. The handbook was written and completed within the Mathematics Education program as a response to the release of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and its call for mathematical modeling. This was the beginning of her interest in mathematical modeling. She believes this has been the largest project that she has been involved with at TC.

She was given the opportunity to be a teaching assistant for both Professors Pollak and Professor Garrity. While assisting Dr. Garrity, she worked with pre-service and in-service elementary teachers, addressing the development of their mathematical content knowledge. Heather was able to learn more about teaching elementary mathematics, how elementary teachers understand mathematics, their difficulties with the subject, and what can be done to address those difficulties.

Heather is currently co-teaching an experimental mathematical modeling workshop with Dr. Pollak. The focus of the course is twofold: for the participants, it is to learn about mathematical modeling, with a particular emphasis on the process of modeling; for her and Dr. Pollak, the purpose is to see how teachers react to mathematical modeling and how teachers feel after completing mathematical modeling activities, with particular emphasis on the activities found within the COMAP handbook. The general goal is for the participants to feel comfortable teaching mathematical modeling and to learn how to teach mathematical modeling better. ?The great thing about teaching teachers is that they are always able to give you good criticism about what you can do better, so they in turn learn better,? Heather says.

Heather recently completed an exciting mathematics course with the Summer Institute for the Gifted After School program, teaching sports statistics to 6th ? 8th grade gifted students. She developed an investigative, real-world curriculum in which students were given the opportunity to develop their very own statistic for the sport of their choice. Gifted students from all over the city chose to participate in the course. At the end of the course, the students presented their statistical work to their parents giving oral reports. The parents were very pleased by the work that their children had completed within this program and they showed their admiration at the end of the presentations with roaring applause. This was a heart-warming experience for Heather and she hopes to teach in this program again in the future.

Heather was the editor for the Spring-Summer 2012 issue of the Mathematics Education program journal, the Journal of Mathematics Education at Teachers College. Each issue has a special focus theme, with assessment being the theme of the Spring-Summer 2012 issue. In addition to that, she has played a small role as an adviser for the Teachers College Handbook on Mathematical Modeling Assessment that will be published by COMAP in the near future.

Over the summer, Professor Walker offered Heather the opportunity to work as a curriculum developer on an interdisciplinary curriculum project entitled Understanding Fiscal Responsibility. The project includes lessons in mathematics, economics, civics, history, and government. She helped to develop and write some of the mathematics lessons intended to help students understand and look critically at the federal budget and national debt.

After completing her degree, Heather hopes to continue her research as a professor of mathematics or mathematics education and to provide professional development for teachers on mathematical modeling. She states, ?I haven?t taught college classes in a while and I miss it.?

She is an active member of National Council for Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), attends conferences regularly, and has published in NCTM?s elementary education journal, Teaching Children Mathematics.

Aside from her busy academic schedule, Heather enjoys spending time with her fianc? and her two pets. She is also an avid fan of baseball and the New York Mets, in particular; she watches most games and attends them when she is able. Heather enjoys building with LEGO bricks and would eventually like to own an educational toy store.

Obama launches push for immigration overhaul

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Seeking swift action on immigration, President Barack Obama on Tuesday will try to rally public support behind his proposals for giving millions of illegal immigrants a pathway to citizenship, as well as making improvements to the legal immigration system and border security.

The president will launch his push in a campaign-style event in Las Vegas, a day after a bipartisan group of senators unveiled their own plan for addressing an issue that has languished in Washington for years.

Administration officials said Obama would largely endorse the senators' efforts, though immigration advocates said they expected the president's own proposals to be more progressive than the Senate group's plan, including a faster pathway to citizenship.

The simultaneous immigration campaigns were spurred by the November presidential election, in which Obama won an overwhelming majority of Hispanic voters. The results caused Republican lawmakers who had previously opposed immigration reform to reconsider in order to rebuild the party's reputation among Hispanics, an increasingly powerful political force.

Most of the recommendations Obama will make Tuesday are not new. He outlined an immigration blueprint in May 2011 but exerted little political capital to get it passed by Congress, to the disappointment of many Hispanics.

Obama "believes that we are at a moment now where there seems to be support coalescing at a bipartisan level behind the very principles that he has long put forward and behind principles that have in the past enjoyed bipartisan support," White House press secretary Jay Carney said Monday. "And that is a very positive thing."

The president was to make his pitch in Nevada, a political battleground he carried in November, in large part because of support from Hispanics in the state.

Nationally, Obama won 71 percent of the Hispanic vote, giving him a key advantage over Republican rival Mitt Romney.

Administration officials said the president would bolster his 2011 immigration blueprint with some fresh details. His original plan centered on four key areas: a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants in the U.S., improved border security, an overhaul of the legal immigration system, and an easier process for businesses to verify the legal status of workers.

Administration officials said they were encouraged to see the Senate backing the same broad principles. In part because of the fast action on Capitol Hill, Obama does not currently plan to send lawmakers formal immigration legislation.

However, officials said the White House does have legislation drafted and could fall back on it should the Senate process stall. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss internal strategy.

Gay and lesbian advocates were also expecting Obama's proposals to include recognition of same-sex couples where one partner is American and another is not.

Sen. John McCain called the issue a "red flag" in an interview Tuesday on "CBS This Morning."

The Arizona Republican also said he didn't think the issue was of "paramount importance at this time."

"We'll have to look at it," McCain said. But he added that the highest priority is finding a "broad consensus" behind the immigration bill already being planned. He said the country must do something about 11 million people "living in the shadows."

Obama's previous proposals for creating a pathway to citizenship required those already in the U.S. illegally to register with the government and submit to security checks; pay registration fees, a series of fines and back taxes; and learn English. After eight years, individuals would be allowed to become legal permanent residents and could eventually become citizens five years later.

The Senate group's pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants already in the U.S. would be contingent upon securing the border and improving tracking of people in the U.S. on visas. Linking citizenship to border security could become a sticking point between the White House and lawmakers.

The Senate framework would also require those here illegally to pass background checks and pay fines and taxes in order to qualify for a "probationary legal status" that would allow them to live and work here ? but not qualify for federal benefits ? before being able to apply for permanent residency, a critical step toward citizenship. Once they are allowed to apply they would do so behind everyone else already waiting for a green card within the current immigration system.

Passage of legislation by the full Democratic-controlled Senate is far from assured, but the tallest hurdle could come in the House, which is dominated by conservative Republicans who've shown little interest in immigration reform.

The senators involved in formulating the immigration proposals, in addition to McCain, are Democrats Charles Schumer of New York, Dick Durbin of Illinois, Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Michael Bennet of Colorado; and Republicans Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Marco Rubio of Florida and Jeff Flake of Arizona.

Several of these lawmakers have worked for years on the issue. McCain collaborated with the late Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy on comprehensive immigration legislation pushed by then-President George W. Bush in 2007, only to see it collapse in the Senate when it couldn't get enough GOP support.

IMF sees higher Mauritius GDP growth in 2013

PORT LOUIS (Reuters) - Mauritius' economy will grow 3.7 percent in 2013 compared to 3.3 percent last year, helped by improved activity in fisheries, financial services and information and communication technology, the International Monetary Fund said on Wednesday.

The IMF had previously forecast the Indian Ocean island's economy would expand 3.7 percent in 2012.

"Growth will be fuelled by strong growth in fisheries, information and communication technology and financial services," Martin Petri, IMF mission chief told a news conference.

The IMF's forecast matches the government's own projection.

The Indian Ocean island is striving to depend less on Europe, its main source of revenue from tourism and a major market for its textiles, sugar and services industry, and has been branching into information technology, business outsourcing and offshore banking.

Tourism still accounts for about 10 percent of the island's $10 billion economy, however, with European tourists typically making up some two-thirds of visitors.

The fund said it expected annual average inflation to rise to 5.7 percent this year from 4 percent in 2012.

"Inflationary pressures could emerge in 2013 from wage increases in private sector linked to the decision to increase public sector wages and also from adjustments in administered prices," Petri said.

Official: Florida vs South Carolina, Wednesday, 8:00 PM, SEC Network

The South Carolina Gamecocks are the next team to test themselves against the league leading, and currently ranked # 4, Florida Gators. This will be the first of a slate of games where we will see our guys play 4 out of 5 in the confines of the O-Dome. The Rowdy Reptiles are going to get a good workout over the next couple of weeks with the last of these 5 being the Kentucky Wildcats. It should be a really exciting time as they set the Dome rocking and even get the older fans involved.

The Gamecocks come in with an overall record of 12-7 including 2-4 in conference play. Their best win to date has been a 21 point win over Arkansas in their last outing. However all of their losses have been close ones so we can expect a team that is going to fight hard for an upset. There's not a whole lot that can be said with respect to our game at this point as once again it is a matter of the Gator players focusing on the team at hand. If they do and continue to play like they have been then it should be another win similar to the last few.

For those who don't know, Prather is not scheduled to play this game but there is a chance he may be ready by Saturday.

Go Gators!!!!!

Altering eye cells may one day restore vision

Jan. 25, 2013 ? Doctors may one day treat some forms of blindness by altering the genetic program of the light-sensing cells of the eye, according to scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Working in mice with retinitis pigmentosa, a disease that causes gradual blindness, the researchers reprogrammed the cells in the eye that enable night vision. The change made the cells more similar to other cells that provide sight during daylight hours and prevented degeneration of the retina, the light-sensing structure in the back of the eye. The scientists now are conducting additional tests to confirm that the mice can still see.

"We think it may be significantly easier to preserve vision by modifying existing cells in the eye than it would be to introduce new stem cells," says senior author Joseph Corbo, MD, PhD, assistant professor of pathology and immunology. "A diseased retina is not a hospitable environment for transplanting stem cells."

The study is available in the early online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Mutations in more than 200 genes have been linked to various forms of blindness. Efforts are underway to develop gene therapies for some of these conditions.

Rather than seek treatments tailored to individual mutations, Corbo hopes to develop therapies that can alleviate many forms of visual impairment. To make that possible, he studies the genetic factors that allow cells in the developing eye to take on the specialized roles necessary for vision.

The retina has two types of light-sensing cells or photoreceptors. The rods provide night vision, and the cones sense light in the daytime and detect fine visual details.

In retinitis pigmentosa, the rods die first, leaving patients unable to see at night. Daytime vision often remains intact for some time until the cones also die.

Corbo and others have identified several genes that are active in rods or in cones but not in both types of photoreceptors. He wondered whether turning off a key gene that is activated only in rods could protect the cells from the loss of vision characteristic of retinitis pigmentosa.

'"The question was, when retinitis pigmentosa is caused by a mutation in a protein only active in rods, can we reduce or stop vision loss by making the cells less rod-like?" he explains.

The new study focuses on a protein known as Nrl, which influences development of photoreceptors. Cells that make Nrl become rods, while cells that lack the protein become cones. Turning off the Nrl gene in developing mice leads to a retina packed with cone cells.

To see if this rod-to-cone change was possible in adult mice, Corbo created a mouse model of retinitis pigmentosa with an Nrl gene that could be switched on and off by scientists.

"In adult mice, switching off Nrl partially converts the rod cells into cone cells," he says. "Several months later, when the mutant mice normally had very little vision left, we tested the function of their retina."

The test showed a healthier level of electrical activity in the retinas of mice that lacked Nrl, suggesting that the mice could still see.

Corbo now is looking for other critical development factors that can help scientists more fully transform adult rods into cones. He notes that if complete conversion of rods to cones were possible, this therapy could also be helpful for conditions where cone cells die first, such as macular degeneration.

Blacks treated less, die sooner from advanced colon cancer

Researchers from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and Stanford University analyzed more than 11,000 patients from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)-Medicare linked database. Not only were blacks diagnosed with stage IV metastatic colorectal cancer less likely to be referred for specialized care and less likely to receive radiotherapy or surgery, they were 15% likelier to die before a white patient at the same disease stage.

The study team also calculated that black patients who received the same treatment as whites survived just as long -- an extra two months, on average.

"We've known for quite some time that there are disparities between black and white patients with most all cancers, especially colorectal cancer, from screening through diagnosis, to after they're diagnosed [when] they have inferior outcomes," said Dr. James Murphy, an assistant professor in the department of radiation medicine and applied sciences at UCSD, in an interview with AuntMinnie.com.

"We wanted to tease out a little more about where the disparity is, so we looked at the rates of consultation as well as the rates of treatment in the various modalities for colorectal cancer," he said. "We found there were disparities pretty much across the board in that black patients were much less likely to see a specialist in consultation, and after they saw the specialist, were less likely to be treated with whatever modality, be it palliative radiation and chemotherapy or surgery."

Murphy and co-investigator Dr. Quynh-Thu Le, from Stanford's radiation oncology department, used the SEER-Medicare database to select patients with stage IV colorectal cancer ages 66 and older who were diagnosed between 2000 and 2007.

They probed the data for racial differences in consultation rates and subsequent treatment with surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation, using univariate and multivariate logistic regression models, estimating overall survival using Kaplan-Meier plots. Multivariate Cox regression models were used to determine factors that potentially explained the race-based survival differences, the authors wrote in their ASCO poster presentation.

They identified a total of 11,216 patients diagnosed with stage IV metastatic colorectal cancer during the study period, of whom 9,935 were white and 1,281 were black. After adjusting for confounding covariates, the researchers found that black patients were less likely to be seen by a surgeon, medical oncologist, or radiation oncologist.

Even when black patients were seen in consultation, they were less likely than white patients to receive primary tumor-directed surgery, liver- or lung-directed surgery, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy. Black patients also had inferior survival compared to white patients, with a mean survival time of 4.7 months, compared with 6.3 months for whites (p < 0.0001). Without adjusting the data beyond patient race, blacks had a 15% greater chance of dying than whites (p < 0.0001).

"The survival difference is small, but if you put it in context, survival differences for novel chemotherapy agents are typically measured in weeks and months," Murphy noted, adding that "survival for these patients is very short, and two months is a lot of time in a patient who has a median survival of only six months."

Taking additional factors into consideration, the group discovered the following:

  • After adjusting for variables including age, gender, comorbidities, and tumor site, the risk of death for black patients increased slightly to 16% (p < 0.0001).
  • After adjusting for demographic variables such as income, location, and year of diagnosis, black patients' increased risk of death decreased slightly to 10% (p = 0.004).
  • After adjusting for the specific treatment received, the race-based increased risk of death was no longer seen in the data (p = 0.81).

This suggests that survival has nothing to do with race and everything to do with treatment, where the data show the disparity lies, Murphy said.

Care received for black vs. white patients
Type of care Whites Blacks
Surgery
Consultation with surgeon 91% 88%
If consultation, probability of primary tumor surgery 73% 67%
If consultation, probability of diversion/ostomy 6.5% 7.4%
Chemotherapy
Consultation with oncologist 82% 81%
If consultation, probability of chemotherapy 59% 50%
Radiation therapy
Consultation with radiation oncologist 22% 17%
If consultation, probability of radiation therapy 58% 55%

The overall conclusion was that black patients were less likely to be referred or treated for metastatic colorectal cancer. Everyone in the population had Medicare, so it wasn't a question of being uninsured, Murphy said. Nevertheless, SEER data always impose limitations, and obtaining some patient details is always going to be a challenge with this type of study design.

"For example, while we have income data, it's so-called regional income data based on where the patient lived and what sort of income was in that area, so it's not exactly the specific patient's income," Murphy explained. "So, that said, we were able to control for income, we were able to control for geography, we were able to control for population density -- but everything we were able to control for didn't explain the differences between black and white patients."

Still, the cost of care is an important question that points to the need for additional research that the group is now conducting, he said. For example, even if patients are receiving similar treatments, are their costs similar? Also, with Medicare, patients are responsible for co-payments, and it will be important to know if co-payments might represent a barrier to treatment that differs by race. New SEER data for 2008 and 2009 have just been published, and the study results will be updated to include them, Murphy said.

"But to tell you the truth, during our study period of patients diagnosed between 2000 and 2007, we didn't see any time differences," he said. "It's a little bit frustrating because it shows that these racial differences really persisted over our study period."

"There's a lot of research on racial disparity, and this study helps us hone in a little bit in terms of disparities both before and after consultation with a specialist," he said. "Whether or not it's the same mechanism that's causing the disparity before or after is hard to say with this data, but I think it's telling us that we really need to do more detailed analyses of physician-patient interactions, physician biases, and patient biases."

"Or are there other sorts of barriers both within and outside of the healthcare system in terms of the patient environment that we're not accounting for that are resulting in these outcomes?" he added. "I think most importantly this study is showing that treatment differences really could impact survival."

Suspect in India gang rape to be tried as juvenile

NEW DELHI (AP) ? A juvenile court ruled Monday that a suspect in the fatal gang rape of a young woman in New Delhi last month was a juvenile at the time of the attack.

A lawyer present in the court said a magistrate of the Juvenile Justice Board announced the decision after going over documents presented to the court by officials of the suspect's elementary school that indicated that he was under 18 years of age at the time of the Dec. 16 attack.

The lawyer could not be named because he was not authorized to brief media. The lawyer said that the suspect's school documents showed him to be about six months short of his 18th birthday at the time of the attack.

The suspect did not possess a birth certificate ? a common occurrence in India where many babies are born at home and not in a hospital. In such cases, school records are often used as proof of age or identity.

The suspect, who is not being identified by The Associated Press because of his age, could face three years in a reform facility if he is convicted as a juvenile. A conviction as an adult could have led to his execution.

Police say the 23-year-old victim and a male friend boarded the bus on Dec. 16 after seeing an evening movie. But the bus turned out to be off-duty and was being driven by a group of friends who, police say, attacked the couple and then took turns raping the woman. They also penetrated her repeatedly with a metal bar, causing massive internal injuries. The two were eventually dumped on the roadside. The woman died two weeks later in a Singapore hospital.

Meanwhile, a fast-track court was separately hearing arguments Monday in the trial of the five men charged with the attack. Details of the proceedings were not available because of a gag order against revealing what happens inside the courtroom.

The attack set off protests across India and opened a debate about its epidemic of violence against women.

Women say they feel under siege and are so frightened they have structured their entire lives to protect themselves from harassment and attack. Many travel in groups, go out of their homes only during the day and carry sharp objects to stab men who grope them on public buses.

Those who are raped are often blamed by their families for the attack. If they report the crime, the police often refuse to file a report or try to get the victim and attacker to reach a settlement. If it reaches court, the case can drag on for years in the overburdened justice system.

(AP) ? Lionel Messi scored four goals to become the youngest player to pass the 200-mark in the Spanish league and set a La Liga record with goals in 11 consecutive games, leading Barcelona to a 5-1 rout of Osasuna on Sunday night.

With his 22nd hat trick for Barcelona and fifth game of four goals or more, Messi increased his La Liga total to 202 goals in 235 games. The 25-year-old became the eighth player to reach 200, joining Telmo Zarra (251), Hugo Sanchez (234), Raul Gonzalez (228), Alfredo di Stefano (227), Cesar Rodriguez (223), Quini (219) and Pahino (210). Zarra had been the youngest to reach 200, achieving the feat when he was 29.

Messi has 44 goals this season, including 33 in La Liga. He has scored in his last 16 starts overall and in a record 11 consecutive La Liga games, breaking the mark he tied last season. Mariano Martin (1942-43 to 1943-44) and Brazil's Ronaldo (1996-97) also accomplished the feat, both for Barcelona.

Barcelona hosts Real Madrid on Wednesday in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals.

"We went out there and took care of business like always," Messi said. "It was important to put the game away because it isn't easy when everyone is talking so much about the 'clasico'."

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 20th career hat trick in an 11-minute span to lead defending champion Real Madrid over Getafe 4-0.

Barcelona (19-1-1) reopened an 11-point lead over second-place Atletico Madrid (15-3-2), which lost 3-0 at Athletic Bilbao. Real Madrid (13-4-4) trails Barcelona by 15 points.

LONDON (AP) ? Liverpool and Tottenham lost to lower-league opponents in the FA Cup on Sunday, joining a lengthy list of Premier League teams to exit in the fourth round of soccer's oldest knockout competition.

Oldham, in 19th place in the third tier, stunned visiting Liverpool 3-2. Despite a goal from American Clint Dempsey, Spurs lost 2-1 at Leeds, which is 11th in the second-tier League Championship.

Chelsea was spared a similar fate when Fernando Torres scored in the 83rd minute for a 2-2 tie at third-tier Brentford, forcing a replay.

The FA Cup is famous for upsets. On Saturday, Luton defeated Norwich 1-0 to become the first non-league club in 24 years to beat a top-tier opponent.

Fourth-tier Bradford set the tone this season by reaching the League Cup final after knocking out both Arsenal and Aston Villa.

"You have to take it on the chin, but there has been plenty of warnings throughout the weekend," Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said. "If your application is not right, you can get found out."

Both Liverpool and Tottenham fielded weakened lineups but they still contained plenty of millionaire players.

"I am left speechless by the result," said Oldham forward Matt Smith, who scored twice for a team that is 55 places lower than Liverpool in England's soccer pyramid. "We went out there wanting to battle together."

Oldham made its name in the early 1990s when the club reached two FA Cup semifinals (1990 and '94) and a League Cup final ('90), where it lost to Nottingham Forest.

Smith's third-minute goal was offset by Luis Suarez's in the 17th, but Oldham went ahead 3-1 when Smith scored in the fourth minute of first-half injury time and Reece Wabara got a goal in the 48th. Joe Allen's 80th-minute goal for Liverpool made the final minutes tense.

Tottenham, which is fourth in the Premier League, fell behind 2-0 when Luke Varney scored in the 15th and Ross McCormack in the 50th, Dempsey, playing at forward, headed in Gareth Bale's cross in the 58th for his eighth goal of the season.

The fifth round next month features Millwall at Luton, Reading at Manchester United, Leeds at Manchester City, Blackburn at Arsenal, Everton at Oldham, Barnsley at MK Dons, Chelsea or Brentford at Middlesbrough and Wigan at Huddersfield or Leicester.

ROME (AP) ? Edinson Cavani scored the go-ahead goal in the 85th minute, and Napoli won 2-1 at Parama to close within three points of Serie A leader Juventus.

Marek Hamsik scored in the 20th minute but Parma tied it in the 74th on an own goal by Napoli captain Paolo Cannavaro, playing his first game since a suspension for match-fixing was overturned. Cannavaro and defender Gianluca Grava were given six-month bans by the Italian soccer federation's disciplinary committee on Dec. 18, but the penalties were lifted Jan. 17 following an appeal to the federation's internal court.

Defender champion Juventus (15-3-4) has 49 points while Napoli (14-4-4), seeking its first title since Diego Maradona led it to the 1990 championship, has 46. Parma lost at home for the first time this season.

AC Milan (11-7-4) moved into fifth place with a 1-0 win at Atalanta on a 29th-minute goal by Stephen El Shaarawy, his 15th league goal this season.

Fourth-place Inter Milan (12-6-4), which is nine points back, was held to a 2-2 tie by visiting Torino.Christian Chivu gave Inter the lead in fifth with a free kick but left in the 28th with an apparent injury. Goals by Riccardo Meggiorini in the 23rd and 52nd minutes put Torino ahead. but Esteban Cambiasso tied the score for Inter when he redirecting a cross from 39-year-old captain Javier Zanetti in the 67th.

___

BERLIN (AP) ? Mario Mandzukic scored a goal and set up another as Bayern Munich beat Stuttgart 2-0 to open an 11-point lead in the Bundesliga.

Mandzukic scored in the 50th minute, when he intercepted a backpass from defender Christian Molinaro and rounded goalkeeper Sven Ulreich, then cossed for Thomas Mueller's goal on a counterattack in the 72nd.

Bayern (15-1-3) has 48 points. Leverkusen (11-4-4) has 37 after Saturday's 0-0 tie at Freiburg.

Hamburg defeated Werder Bremen 3-2 in the Bundesliga's 98th northern derby to end a three-game losing streak in games against its rival.

___

PARIS (AP) ? Paris Saint-Germain regained the French league lead, getting an own goal by Aurelien Chedjou in the 68th minute for a 1-0 win against visiting Lille.

Goalkeeper Steeve Elana palmed away a cross, and the ball bounced off Chedjou's chest into the goal.

PSG (13-3-6) leads on goal difference over Lyon (13-3-6), both three points ahead of Marseille (13-6-3).

Green Deal loans scheme to launch

Householders are to be offered long-term loans to help make their homes more energy efficient and cut bills under a new government scheme.

Ministers said the Green Deal, which operates in England and Wales, will help thousands "stay warm for less".

Under the scheme, households can use loans to spend on energy-saving improvements, such as insulation and new boilers, with no upfront cost.

Campaigners said the project would "not stop fuel poverty rocketing".

    How it works

The move to insulate the UK's aged housing stock is designed to save carbon emissions, keep people warm, and make energy affordable.

People who've taken on the Green Deal will generally feel a lot better off?

End Quote Paul Reeve Electrical Contractors' Association

Homeowners will first be visited by an assessor, who will ask some basic questions about their energy usage.

Approved Green Deal installers, such as energy companies or DIY chains, will then advise on potential improvements, such as double-glazing, insulation or new heating systems.

Consumers will pay for the improvements by taking out a loan with the Green Deal Finance Company, a non-profit making organisation backed by the government.

Such loans will be paid back through electricity bills for periods of up to 25 years.

There is no guarantee that the eventual savings made by consumers will match the cost of the loans they take out to make the improvements.

"However, there's a good chance that you will make savings," said Paul Reeve, of the Electrical Contractors' Association.

    The costs

Consumers taking out Green Deal loans will have to repay them at a maximum rate of 6.92%, according to the Department of Energy and Climate Change.

Compared to a standard home loan rate, that is relatively high.

On top of the loan, householders will have to pay a ?63 set-up charge, and a ?20 a year annual fee.

On a loan of ?5,000, the overall rate that is repayable is just under 8% over 10 years, or 7.7% over 25 years.

The government argues that such rates are comparable to the best High Street rates for long-term unsecured loans.

The amount that anyone can borrow will be capped at ?10,000.

    Moving on

Mr Reeve said it was possible, but unlikely, that consumers could end up out of pocket.

"Many of us believe that energy prices will continue to rise over the coming years. If that's true, people who've taken on the Green Deal will generally feel a lot better off," he explained.

We call on the prime minister to use money from the carbon tax to super-insulate this country's homes?

End Quote Ed Matthews Energy Bill Revolution

Should householders sell their home, the loan will need to be taken on by any new homeowner.

Mark Bayley, the chief executive of the newly created Green Deal Finance Company, said: "What makes it work is that the experience of energy companies is that people's default rate is very much lower than the experience in consumer credit and that's how we're able to construct very long term, low cost financing."

"And as people move house the loans they take out under Green Deal plan stay behind with their electricity meter."

If householders transfer to a different electricity provider, the loan will transfer at the same time.

Consumers are allowed to pay the loans off early, but a fee might apply.

    More needed?

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said: "The Green Deal will help thousands of homes stay warm for less. Those people will benefit from energy saving improvements - and their energy bills will fall."

However, campaigners have warned that the new scheme does not go far enough.

Ed Matthews, head of fuel poverty campaign group Energy Bill Revolution, said: "The Green Deal and Energy Company Obligation will not stop fuel poverty rocketing in the face of high gas prices."

"We call on the prime minister to use money from the carbon tax to super-insulate this country's homes.

According to Groundwork UK, which has been working on the scheme, potential energy savings can be worth up to ?300 a year.

"For relatively low expenditure, you can make a big difference to the cost of your fuel bill," says Sir Tony Hawkhead of Groundwork.

He estimates that typical average savings on a small house can be ?120 a year, rising to ?270 for a three or four bedroom house, "or possibly higher than that".

But he acknowledges that in some cases, the cost of the loan could be more expensive than the savings gained.

"Obviously the cost of installing the energy efficiency measures, such as a new boiler or dealing with solid walls, can be higher."

For Super Bowl ads, it's go viral or go home

    1 day

Call them super leaks, super teasers or super previews. But for a growing number of Super Bowl advertisers, they are super smart business.

For years, Super Bowl commercials were closely guarded secrets until they aired on the biggest ratings day of the year. These days, companies have discovered that teasing them online in advance of the big day is a more efficient way of getting their brand message in front of the masses.

CBS, which will broadcast Super Bowl XLVII on?Feb. 3, sold 30-second ad slots for up to $4 million, so it?s no wonder advertisers try to squeeze every drop of value out of their investment.

"We are seeing more teasers because they have been effective," said?Steve Posavac, professor of marketing at Vanderbilt University. "This year, many advertisers feel that if they don?t release a teaser, they will fail to gain consumers? mindshare, and that their ads will be lost in the clutter."

Mercedes-Benz roared out of the starting line first last week, with its spot featuring Kate Upton. Strutting in daisy dukes and a low cut tank top, the striking supermodel blows suds in slow motion at a group of guys as they wash her Benz and ogle her frame, mouths agape.

Though it shows less skin than a standard shampoo commercial -- and seems demure in comparison to?Upton's past backseat turn for Carl's Jr.?last year ? it has already drummed up plenty of buzz. As of Friday night, the teaser racked has up more than 4.6 million YouTube views.

That?s right, more than a week before the San Francisco 49ers face the Baltimore Ravens, Mercedes-Benz?s ad is already a success. And, thanks to the Parents? Television Council, we have the first Super Bowl controversy.

"This ad [reinforces] for millions of wives, daughters and sisters across the country that you use your sex appeal to get what you want," a Parents' Television Council spokesperson told the Daily Mail, complaining that the ad "isn't selling cars, it?s selling sexual objectification."

The sound bite provided global media outlets (ours included) the perfect news hook. In the following days, the ad has been discussed, analyzed, and played over and over again, at no cost to the Mercedes. Talk about return on investment!

The luxury German automaker isn?t the only player in this game. Coca-Cola, Sketchers, Wonderful Pistachios (with 'Gagngam Style' superstar Psy) and MiO (with Tracy Morgan) have released previews.

Coke is also making a huge social media play with its "Mirage" campaign. In it, three quirky character-driven groups -- show girls, badlanders, and cowboys -- race across an African desert to be the first to reach the thirst-quenching Coca-Cola oasis. A preview spot is circulating online encouraging viewers to vote online to determine which group ends up winning in the final spot. Online surfers can either vote by "old-fashioned" online button clicking, or vote-casting with the Twitter hashtags #CokeCowboys, #CokeShowgirls and #CokeBadlanders.

The beverage giant?s advertising company has also cooked up animated gifs, "sabotage videos" and other content ready-made for Tweeting, Tumbling, Instagramming, and Facebooking.?

Indeed,?Coke?has come a long way from Mean Joe Greene?s jersey toss in Coke?s legendary commercial 34 years ago.

The reason for the big social push is simple: More shares equal more views, which equals more brand exposure.

"Without a social media component, a Super Bowl ad is worthless," said?David Johnson, CEO of public relations agency Strategic Vision.

Social has risen and advertisers are rising to meet it.

"Three quarters of the audience will be on a 'second screen' during the Super Bowl,? said Ankarino Lara, chief product officer for Thismoment, which builds branded online content distribution software. "The biggest brands recognize the audience shift and plan mobile and on live elements in their campaigns."

According to data by the Unruly Viral Video Chart, the "Billboard 100 of viral videos," 75 percent of the top 20 most-shared ads from Super Bowl 2012 went up online before game day;? 55 percent of sharing happened after March 1, 2012; and total Super Bowl ads shares increased by 129 percent from 2011 to 2012.

Audi is taking a similar "choose your own adventure" approach as Coke's. On Thursday night, it posted the beginning of its ad, showing a kid driving to his high school prom dateless but in his dad's new 2013 Audi S6 high-performance sports sedan. The German automaker also uploaded three versions of the ending, giving viewers 24 hours to vote on which one will make the final cut.

Other companies are also hopping on the social bandwagon:?

    • Doritos has reprised its annual "Crash the Super Bowl" contest, allowing a fan-made commercial to air during the game.?
    • Lincoln has teamed up with Jimmy Fallon to let fans write the script for its commercial on Twitter with the hashtag #Steerthescript.?
    • Pepsi, Pizza Hut and Toyota will include fan-submitted photos in a commercial.?
    • VW is promoting the #GetHappy hashtag.

Advertisers still have plenty of tricks up their sleeves, though, and some are deliberately taking an "anti-leak" strategy that still has an eye on Twitter impact.

"Some advertisers are holding back ads for a 'surprise' factor and for the instant chatter that will take place on social media during the game," said Katherine Wintsch, founder of The Mom Complex, an Interpublic Group of Companies unit focused on marketing to mothers.

Brands still place a premium on using the Super Bowl as the ultimate stage for product debuts; Anheuser-Busch is going to debut two new drinks at the game: Budweiser Black Crown and Beck's Sapphire.

"I don?t know what it is, but everyone finds humor in dog ads or baby ads," John Yorke, President of creative firm Rain 43, said. "Last year, we saw lots of both ? and the highest rated ads came from these categories ? so if it ain?t broke, don?t fix it ? expect to see more of this trend."?

Africa awaits new goal king at Nations Cup finals

    JOHANNESBURG | Sun Jan 13, 2013 3:03am GMT

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Africa is waiting to anoint a new goal king at the Nations Cup to succeed Didier Drogba, likely to be playing in his last tournament, and Samuel Eto'o who misses out again.

The list of potential successors at this month's finals in South Africa is thin but there is always hope that at least one future goal machine could emerge from among the 16 finalists.

Drogba, with 56 goals in 89 games for Ivory Coast, has been virtually unstoppable at international level while Eto'o holds the record for most goals at the tournament - 18 at six finals.

However, Eto'o's hopes of extending that have been halted by Cameroon's failure to qualify for the last two editions.

While a path is clearing for pretenders to emerge, there has been a dearth of striking talent from Africa in the last few years.

The top scorers at the last Nations Cup managed just three goals - and there were seven of them.

Drogba, Zambia pair Chris Katongo and Emmanuel Mayuka, Cheick Tidiane Diabate of Mali and Angola's Manucho return for the 2013 finals, which kick off in Johannesburg on Saturday.

But it is more likely that a new scoring sensation could emerge from near obscurity.

Ivory Coast's Wilfried Bony has been dubbed the 'next Drogba' and, if preferred in the starting line-up in South Africa to struggling pair Salomon Kalou or Gervinho, could go on to make good on his promise at club level.

    SCORING CHARTS

Sixteen goals in 18 games for Vitesse Arnhem this season makes him the top scorer in the Dutch league, the only African to head the scoring charts in a major league.

Lancina Traore has been restored to the Ivory Coast squad after a run of nine goals for Anzhi Makhachkala in the Russian league, one more than Nigeria's big hope Ahmed Musa, who has eight for CSKA Moscow.

Musa first made an impact in the Dutch league too.

Manucho, briefly on Manchester United's books, has six goals for Spain's Real Valladolid, including a pair last month against Real Madrid, but has often failed to fulfil his potential.

Holders Zambia hope a return from injury for Jacob Mulenga will provide them with a prolific target man, while hosts South Africa are relying on Katlego Mphela, top scorer in domestic competition over the last three seasons but just back from a six month lay-off following knee surgery.

The best bet to step up is a player proven at club level already. Tottenham Hotspur's Emmanuel Adebayor has often been in the shadow of Drogba and Eto'o but, just when opportunity knocks, he has been embroiled in off-field turmoil which leaves little scope for him or his Togo team to make an impact.

Self-Help Tips To Help You Handle Anything - Empower Network

There are many people out there that can help you to learn more about who you are. Discovering who you are, is a lot easier with the aid of friends, professionals, and teachers to help guide you.

Focus on changing just one thing about yourself at any given time. Although you may have a long list of self-improvement goals, it can be more effective, and you will be more successful, if you tackle them one at a time. By limiting your focus and introducing adjustments gradually, the change is more likely to be permanent.

TIP! Try writing down goals you want to reach if you want to better yourself. For instance, if one of your goals is to gain confidence, include that in your list.

If you notice yourself struggling with the blues, try increasing the amount of complex carbs in your diet. A diet that is deficient in complex carbohydrates can lead to low serotonin levels. You can accomplish this by increasing the amounts of raw vegetables and fresh fruits as well as nuts, whole grains, brown rice and assorted beans.

Having trouble meeting a significant other in your life? Have you considered online dating? Approximately 40% of all couples these days met online. Yours could be out there searching for you. Each has pros and cons.

Exercise is not only for people wanting to lose weight. There are many different reasons to exercise. When you exercise, your body produces a number of chemicals, such as endorphin, which improve your overall mood.

Be lavish in complimenting others. It is actually better to turn the other cheek and be nice to others.

A precise goal, that is clear in definition, is needed for success with personal development. Make sure that you set specific tangible goals. If you define your goal clearly, it will be easier to achieve it.

If you want to get more from your self improvement then take care of your physical self. Simple things such as getting plenty of quality sleep, eating a nutritious diet and exercising regularly will keep your energy levels up and give you a better chance of reaching the personal development goals you have set for yourself. It may seem easy, but it can be quite difficult to properly care for yourself.

TIP! Learn what others have done that has made them successful. You can avoid both personal and business mistakes by knowing the trials that others have faced.

Don?t put off making decisions, as this could deny you opportunities. Even if you don?t have all the information you would like, don?t be scared to make decisions. You will need to develop your instincts to make good choices. Even bad decisions serve a purpose, as they teach valuable lessons. If you make a wrong choice at one point, then you will ensure that your next one will be better.

Let go of your worries. When you worry, you are making up stories that many times will never come true. Put your worries aside by imagining the very worst thing that could happen and developing a plan on how to deal with that situation, should it occur. If you are prepared, you will feel more in control, even if nothing ever happens.

Knowing what you want out of life and how to get there are great tools for personal development. Having long term goals will make quite the difference in how you perceive the world around you.

TIP! Know the obstacles you face before you hit them. This can prove problematic for most folks.

One way to overcome anxiety is to go see a movie with a friend or family member. This places you in a social situation, but you won?t have to extensively socialize with others. Eventually, it will be second nature to be around a large amount of people.

When you are faced with tough, stressful situations, learn to use your intellect more than your emotions. Learning ways to maintain your composure when stressed will help boost your self-esteem, and help you triumph under any circumstance. Take time to slow down and breathe deeply.

Knowing yourself better than other people is an honor and a privilege. Be nice and honest with yourself so that as time goes on, you can enjoy knowing that you know yourself best.
